Australian Disc Golf Championships 2022

A Report from the Aussie Championships

11 members from Sydney Disc Golf Club made their way north to the 2022 Australian Disc Golf Championships being held at Tunnel Ridge Ranch in Landsborough, Queensland from 18-20 November.

The event kicked off on Thursday with the Australian Doubles Championships and some of our Sydney members were competing in this event also.

In the Open division, Priit Koiv teamed up with Marti Oberg to shoot -8 and finishing 13th place.

In the Intermediate division (under 920-rated), Mat Wallis and Paul Comninos made a late dash to finish tied for first at -6, but couldn’t bring home the win in the sudden death playoff. In the same division, Kairi Koobakene and Stephen Clarke shot a -3.

In the Recreational division (under 880-rated), Tim Wright teamed up with Alex Williams to finish third at Even and Jason Rees teamed up with Chris Scott to finish in fifth at +2.

Mat & Paul twinning it for the doubles

The main event started on Friday and ran through to Sunday with 192 players competing across 16 divisions. It was great to see some of the world’s top players with Drew Gibson winning MPO and Jennifer Allen winning FPO. There were also at least 4 aces at the event including our own Priit Koiv hitting an ace on hole 3 during the final round.

The competition was extremely tight across all the divisions and a number of divisions were won by a single shot or decided by a sudden-death playoff.

Congratulations to Paul Comninos – Australian MA50 Champion, winning by one shot over West Australian’s Jason Browne and Michael Canci. It was great to see Paul bounce back and take this one after his second place earlier this year at Inverleigh.

In FA1 (advanced women), it was all tied up after 54 holes with Kairi Koobakene and Alex Williams sitting on +24. It was off to sudden death on hole 1 where Alex triumphed over Kairi. It’s always tough when it goes to a playoff, but congratulations to Alex for the win and to Kairi for runner-up.

In MA3 (recreational), Tim Wright shot an amazing 2 over 63 (913-rated) for the final round to rocket up onto the podium and take 3rd place. Well done Tim.
