Sydney Disc Golf Club Pop-up Event: 6 April 2023
“Up On Juan” started out in 2013 in a small, wooded park in Rydalmere called Upjohn Park. The inaugural event, later to be known as 1-Up On Juan had a grand total of 20 players. This event continued annually in the week prior to the Vic Open until COVID saw the event take a hiatus.
After the huge success and popularity of the 2023 event, the 8th edition has returned as a non-sanctioned pop-up event with 45 players turning up to play the expanded 10-basket, 20-hole course. The weather didn’t look great with more than 120 mm of rain falling in the 24 hours prior, but the clouds cleared to a bright sunny day – just a little soggy under foot.

The event was proudly sponsored by Disc Golf Warehouse and Disc Connection, with 3 divisions:
- recreational (<820 rating)
- intermediate (820-889 rating)
- advanced (>890 rating)
Advanced
18 players in the 890+ rating division and it was 3 players out in front battling it out – Clayton Beck, Olatundji Akpo-Sani and Mat Wallis. It was a tight battle coming down to the final putt and Mat Wallis taking a 1 shot win at 8 under par. Clayton and Tundji played off for second place, with Clayton taking the runner-up spot by centimetres in a CTP.
Intermediate
A tight battle in intermediate with 5 players finishing at even par or better. John Soden snatched the win by 1 shot at 4 under over Mat Lamy and Andrew Wisniewski. Mat took the runner-up prize after a close CTP play-off.
Recreational
The recreational division had 12 players and it was another close one with Mat Craig taking the win by 1 shot at 4 over over Wayne Tolver-Banks. Owen Harris finished in 3rd place at 8 over.
Best Female Player
We had 4 ladies competing in the event . On paper, Kairi Koobakene was the top female player, but she happily gave up her prize to runner-up Amy Ellis. Amy scored a club polo shirt as a prize.
Closest The Pin (CTP)
In a repeat from last year, the CTP was won again by Daniel Comninos, taking home a $50 voucher from Disc Golf Warehouse.
