Aussie Disc Golf Day – Sydney 2022 Presented by Disc Connection

ADG B-tier Event: 3 December 2022

This year marked the third Aussie Disc Golf Day. 513 players from across the country competed in 15 events linked together using PDGA ratings. The winners would be decided by combining the ratings from two rounds.

In Sydney, 54 players turned up to compete across 10 divisions and we couldn’t have asked for better conditions. A little windy for round 2 but nothing out of the ordinary.

MPO (Professional Open)

Only 3 competitors in MPO and it was a bit of a slow start for the open field. Dan Frost shared the lead with Mario Tolberg after round 1 with a 5 under 54. In the second round the struggle continued for the pros, but Dan Frost did enough with a 3 under 56 to finish 8 under for the tournament and take the win from Olatundji Akpo-Sani just 1 shot behind and Mario Tolberg another short back in third.

MA1 (Advanced Amateur)

It looked like all the cool players wanted to play in MA1 this event with 9 starters. 3 players shared the lead after round 1: Tom Beanland, Priit Koiv and Tanner Sleep all carding a 6 under 53. In the second round, newcomer (to MA1) Tom Beanland romped away with a repeat of round 1 to finish at 12 under, 5 shots clear of runners-up Paul Comninos and Priit Koiv. These 2 consistent rounds were also enough for Tom to finish 4th overall in MA1 for Aussie Disc Golf Day (Australia wide).

FA1 (Advanced Women)

A strong women’s field in Sydney with the entire FA1 division of Aussie Disc Golf Day battling it out at the Armory. Alex and Kairi were back at it after their intense battle in the Aussie Championships just 2 weeks previous. Alex took the advantage in round 1 with a 1 under 58 to lead Kairi by 3. In round 2, it was all up for grabs after Alex struggled home with a 7 over 66. However, Kairi couldn’t capitalise so Alex took the win at 6 over with Kairi 5 shots back. This round was also enough for Alex to win the FA1 division of Aussie Disc Golf Day 2022.

MA40 (40+ Amateur)

A smaller group than usual with 3 players (after 2 last minute withdrawals), but still strong competition in MA40. Mat Wallis came out firing with the hot first round – a 957-rated 7 under to take the overall event lead and 4 shot lead over Tanga Waetford. The tables turned in round 2 though, Tanga shooting a strong 5 under and Mat struggling with OB’s and failing to breaking par. Tanga taking the win by 2 shots. The combined 2 round rating of 1849.2 was enough for Tanga to finish 4th overall in MA40 for Aussie Disc Golf Day (Australia wide) and Mat in 6th with 1831.3.

MA50 (50+ Amateur)

With Paul Comninos going to play MA1, MA50 was up for grabs with 6 players battling it out. Mathew Lamy took a 4 shot first round lead over Andrew Wisniewski with a 2 under 57. In round 2, Mat continued the good form finishing Even for the tournament and 9 shots clear of Andrew.

MA2 (Intermediate Amateur)

6 players competed in MA2 and Matt Ellis took the lead after round 1 with a 4 under 55, 1 shot clear of John Lewis. In round 2, Matt cruised home with a 1 under 58 (along with John Soden and Kade Ashton) to take an easy 5 shot win over John.

MA3 (Recreational Amateur)

Only 8 players in the usually popular MA3 division. Maybe they’d seen that the in-form Tim Wright was playing. After his podium finish at the Aussie Champs just 2 weeks previous, Tim continued his strong form with a 3 under 56 to take a 4 shot round 1 lead over Mitch Bradac. In round 2, Tim took the foot off the accelerator and Mitch put in the last minute dash but fell one shot short of Tim. Tim finishing at Even par and Mitch 1 over.

MA4 (Novice Amateur)

It was great to see a lot of new players in MA4 – 13 players in total with half the field competing in their first tournament. Eorl Osborne was one of these and shot an excellent 2 under 57 to take the round 1 lead by 3 shots over another newcomer, Liam O’Brien. Eorl and Liam battled it out in round 2 and faced a late charge by Michael Eastham who had the best second round of 4 over. It wasn’t enough though to change the top result, with Eorl taking the win by 3 shots over Liam.

FA4 (Novice Women)

The normally strong FA4 division was a little quiet this year. Lisa Wallis was the solo competitor and played exceptionally well shooting an average of 50 points above her rating in both rounds. Her combined rating of 1352.3 putting her in 6th place nationwide.

MJ15 (<15 Junior)

It’s always great to see juniors joining the ranks and this was Dominic’s first tournament (along with Dad in MA4). Dominic played 2 consistent rounds to finish with a combined rating of 1508.1 and finished 7th in the national competition. Well done Dom!

Other Prizes

In round 1, Tim Wright snatched the CTP on hole 1 with his first shot of the day.

In round 2, Liam Aungle grabbed the CTP on hole 10 with a brave throw.

With no aces, a random draw decided the winner – Troy Bourke taking home the cash.
